When Hezbollah staged a large pro-Syrian demonstration in Lebanon last week, opponents of President Bush's policies were cheered. "See?" They chortled, lifting their beleaguered heads above the ramparts, "The 'arab street' doesn't really like democracy."

But, that seems to have been a bit premature.
